Alexander Zverev defeated Shang Juncheng 6–0, 6–3 on Saturday, October 3, to set up a quarterfinal against Novak Djokovic at the Beijing ATP 500. The top seed needed 55 minutes to get past the Chinese wild card.
The result brings this year's Roland Garros and US Open champion together with the China Open's most successful men's champion. Their match is scheduled for Sunday, October 4.
Nine straight games to start
Zverev took the opening set in 22 minutes and moved 3–0 ahead in the second, winning nine consecutive games before Shang got on the scoreboard. The Chinese player claimed the fourth game of the second set but could not turn that response into a threat to the result.
According to AFP, Zverev finished with nine aces. His serve underpinned a quick victory that takes him into the quarterfinals without having needed a deciding set in this round. Official Tennis TV highlights show the key passages of the match.
The tournament's report notes that Shang requested a medical timeout after the first set. Zverev maintained his advantage through the finish, conceding only three games overall.
Djokovic's unbeaten record faces a test
Djokovic's Beijing numbers frame the next challenge: six titles and 31 wins from 31 matches played. The Serbian reached the quarterfinals by beating Bu Yunchaokete in three sets on Friday.
Djokovic also leads their head-to-head 9–5, according to the China Open's official preview. Their most recent meeting was the 2025 Roland Garros quarterfinal, which the Serbian won.
Zverev's current campaign and Djokovic's record provide the backdrop to the matchup, but they do not settle it: a place in the semifinals will be decided on court.
